Spring

English

The children will apply their knowledge of grammar, punctuation and a range of writing genres, which they explored within the previous term, into their creative writing opportunities within the Spring term. They will also follow the Read-Write-Ink Spelling program across the year, applying the new language they come across within their creative writes.

The children will explore writing a range of genres. The genres covered in this term are:

  • Recount – Diary
  • Recount – Letter
  • Narrative – Character speech
  • Narrative – Setting description

 

Maths

Units covered in the Spring term: 

Unit 7- Multiplication and division 2

Unit 8- Fractions 3

Unit 9- Decimals and percentages

Unit 10- Measurement: area and perimeter

Unit D - Christmas:

  • The Gospels proclaim that Jesus is the fulfilment of God’s promises
  • Herod was opposed to the birth of Jesus
  • Mary and Joseph faced great difficulties as a result of Herod’s actions
  • Jesus was born in poverty, there are people today that face similar challenges

Unit E – Baptism:

  • The Gospels proclaim that Jesus is the fulfilment of God’s promises
  • John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecy of preparing the way for Jesus
  • Jesus’ ministry began when he was baptised
  • The sacrament of Baptism has many significant signs, symbols and actions
  • Promises are made during Baptism
  • Baptism is meant to be lived

 

Science

Living things and their habitats:

  • Reproduction is the process in which living things produce offspring. They make another one of the same species.
  • All animals including humans reproduce and have offspring.
  • Mammals give birth to live young.
  • Different animals reproduce in different ways.
  • Plants reproduce through sexual or asexual reproduction.
  • Sexual reproduction in plants means that the plant has male and female parts (pollination).
  • Asexual reproduction needs only 1 parent plant.

 

Art

To know about the artist/sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

See, think, wonder – looking at and thinking about art whilst developing the double page spread.

Experimentation:

  • To draw, considering line and tone.
  • To use line and tone in response to observational drawing.
  • To use lines to create tone, texture and depth.
  • To describe art and share my opinions about the art I have created.

Geography

Earthquakes and Volcanoes

The children will learn about:

  • The earth is made up of four layers called the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core.
  • Tectonic plates move in different ways: convergent, divergent and transform.
  • There are three stages of volcano’s life - dormant, active and extinct.
  • Composite, shield and dome volcanoes are formed.
  • When an eruption occurs, the magma rises through cracks in the earth’s crust, which builds pressure inside the volcano. Magma explodes and the lava then cools to form new rock.
  • Volcanic eruptions have huge impacts on the country’s people economy and the environment,  which last for many years.
  • Mineral rich soils, geothermal heat and inquisitive tourists, create a stable local economy in volcanic areas.
  • An earthquake is when friction between tectonic plates causes pressure to build up until it becomes so great that it is suddenly released as a shock wave.
  • Tremors from earthquakes can cause danger to life from collapsing buildings and damaged roads. 

 

History

The Mayans

The children will discover the following:

  • Many ancient civilisations lasted for thousands of years.
  • The significance of ancient civilisations is still recognised today.
  • Ancient civilisations adapted to their environments.
  • Many ancient societies had a hierarchical system.
  • A range of sources teach us about life in the past.
  • Sacrifice was a feature of many ancient civilisations.
  • All Ancient civilisations were ruled in different ways.
  • There are similarities between the Mayan civilisation and Britain at the same time.
  • The Mayan civilisation suddenly came to an end.

Outdoor/Indoor P.E. - Gymnastics 

Indoor P.E. – core strength and the basic physical skills

 

MFL – Spanish

Content that will be covered:

  • The use of the definite article (the) changes according to the nouns gender and number.
  • Me / te / le can be used in front of verbs
  • ¿Que me recomiendas is a way of asking what a someone recommends
  • Gusta is singular and gustan is plural
  • The way the sentence is said indicates whether it is a question or a statement.
  • Verbs ending in ‘o’ are first person, those in ‘s’ are second person.
  • Use the rule to change the infinitive verb to the imperative.
  • Cognates help us decipher new words.
  • Phrases such as ‘fantastico and felicidades’ give encouragement.
  • Identifying and recognising familiar words helps me to understand longer texts.
  • Use imperative verbs to give instructions.

Mechanism – Pop Up Books

The children will gain the following understanding:

  • A pop-up book is any book with three dimensional pages.
  • A V-shaped flap is a simple but versatile mechanism.
  • A cam is a simple mechanism that converts rotary motion into linear motion.
  • Good quality products should be neat, accurate and securely assembled.
  • It is important to ‘dress up’ the product to ensure that mechanism joints are concealed.

The children will use this knowledge to create their own simple pop-up book.
