Autumn
Art
In Art, Year 6 will be exploring the work of the renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin. We will learn about his life and artistic achievements before developing our own drawing skills through the use of line, proportion and tone. Children will explore realistic sketching techniques, focusing on areas such as hands, the human skeleton and the human figure. They will develop their observational skills and learn how artists use different techniques to create realistic and detailed drawings. The children will then work towards creating a sculpture of their own.
Geography
In Geography, our learning will focus on the fascinating world of tropical rainforests. Children will explore what makes a rainforest, where they are located around the world and the different layers that make up this unique ecosystem. We will investigate the incredible variety of plant and animal species that inhabit rainforests, considering how they have adapted to their environment. Through this topic, children will develop their geographical knowledge, map skills and understanding of the importance of rainforests and the need to protect these valuable environments.
History
In History, Year 6 will be learning about the Second World War. We will investigate the causes of the war, explore significant events and battles, and develop an understanding of what life was like during this important period in history. Children will learn about the Blitz, the experiences of evacuees and the impact the war had on people and communities both at home and abroad. They will develop their chronological understanding, use historical sources to investigate the past and consider how significant events have shaped the world we live in today.
Design and Technology (DT)
In Design and Technology, children will be designing and creating their own automata toys. They will explore how mechanical systems work before planning and making a moving toy using a range of materials and components. Children will develop practical skills, including measuring, marking out, cutting and joining wood, as well as assembling the different parts of their design. Throughout the project, they will apply their problem-solving and design skills, evaluating and refining their creations to produce a finished working product.
English
In English, Year 6 will continue to develop their writing skills, learning how to use a range of techniques to make their writing engaging, effective and interesting for the reader. At the beginning of the year, we will revisit and build upon important grammar and punctuation rules, developing children's understanding of how language can be used for different purposes. We will explore a variety of writing genres, including non-chronological reports, where children will write about fascinating rainforest creatures, linking to our Geography topic. We will also write letters from the perspective of an evacuee, drawing on our learning about the Second World War. Alongside this, children will develop their vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling and ability to adapt their writing for different audiences and purposes, preparing them for the expectations of the end of Key Stage 2.
Maths
In Maths, Year 6 will build upon their mathematical knowledge and develop the confidence and fluency needed to tackle increasingly challenging problems. We will focus on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), fractions and measurement, alongside regular opportunities to practise and strengthen arithmetic skills. Children will develop their understanding of mathematical concepts, learn to apply efficient written and mental methods, and explore how to use their knowledge to solve a range of problems. Throughout the year, we will also develop reasoning skills, encouraging children to explain their mathematical thinking and choose appropriate strategies when tackling unfamiliar challenges, in line with the Year 6 National Curriculum.
