Subitising | numeracy | 4 and 5 - BBC Bitesize
We are aiming for the children to recognise an amount by calculating and not counting. For example, ig the children look in an egg box and 1 egg is missing, we do not want them to count the eggs, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. We want them to calculate one of the following ways. I know there are 5 eggs because a full box is 6, this is 1 less than that and so there must be 5.
OR
I know there are 5 eggs because this row has 3 and this row has 2. 3+2=5.
OR
I can see a group of 4 eggs together there (because there are 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom), and there is 1 egg on its own. 2+2 = 4 and 1 more is 5.
Example
Please ask your child how many in each of the following pictures. Ask them how they know, without counting. Are they calculating?
